A Trick or Treat?
Folklore credits 17th century Germany for the treat’s beginning. Cane-shaped candies were created for children to enjoy while attending nativity services. In hopes these delectable snacks would entertain youngsters for the mass’s duration, they became instant hits and so spawned a new tradition.
RED All About It
Believe it or not, the first candy canes were all white. It’s not entirely known why red came to be on them at all, nor who’s responsible. However, the first image of a candy cane featured in its signature stripes appeared on Christmas cards circa 1900 — the rest is history.
Canes By the Numbers
The largest candy cane ever recorded was over 58 feet tall. Two billion-plus candy canes are sold in November and December alone. While surely not void of sugar, the peppermint sweet contains absolutely no fat or cholesterol (score!).
